For a bright spot in your home through the winter months, try forcing bulbs!
Forcing Paperwhites (Narcissus)

Paperwhites will bloom within 4 to six weeks.
Potting
Fill the pot with growing medium. Place bulbs in soil with the pointed ends up. Fill the pot with more soil, leaving the top and tips of the bulbs exposed.
Watering
Water the pot thoroughly to start the growth. Water the pot once a week after planting. Place the pot in a window with bright sunlight.
Caring for your plant
After flowering, remove dead blooms and stems, the foliage will continue to grow.
Forcing Amaryllis

Your Amaryllis will bloom 6 to 10 weeks from the time it is potted and watered.
Potting
Place two inches of growing mix in the bottom of the pot. Place the Amaryllis bulb in the pot with the pointed, sprouted end facing up. Gently pack soil around the base of the bulb and roots. Leave approximately one half of the bulb exposed.
Watering
Water lightly until the sprout is well out of the bulb. Then water the pot regularly. Turn your pot daily to keep the stem of the plant growing straight up, the plant will want to grow towards the light.
Aftercare
Once the bulb has finished blooming, cut the stem close to the base. Keep the bulb in the pot and continue to water. Stop watering in August and allow the pot to dry out. In early fall, remove the bulb from the pot and remove the dead scales from the bulb. Clean out the pot and replace with new soil and repot the bulb in the same pot. In 8 to 9 week the bulb will bloom again.
